Statement regarding the arrest of children as the hostages from a school
2 August 2022

On August 1, 2022, around 11 a.m., after conducting an air and ground attack on Latpan Kyin village in Myin Mu township in Sagaing region, military terrorist forces surrounded a school opened by the Ministry of Education of the National Unity Government. Ten (10) teachers and a hundred (100) residents have been arrested, including sixty (60) school children.

The National Unity Government, the Ministry of Human Rights, and the Ministry of Women, Youths and Children Affairs all strongly condemn the action of military terrorists, which are disrupting and destroying students' rights to education. And, we are deeply concerned about the possibility of violent acts against innocent residents and children.

According to information received from the ground, at least five residents who are not members of the people defense force have been killed. Residents of that village and neighborhood were forced to flee their homes because military terrorists were burning the houses and seizing their belongings.

On February 26, 2022, military terrorists committed the similar violence, eighty (80) children were abducted as hostages from a school in Yin Mar Pin township, Sagaing region. And the killing of twenty-nine (29) innocent civilians in Mondaing Pin village in Yay Oo township in Sagiang, as well as other incidents, indicates that they committed a massacre of detained civilians.

Military terrorists must release civilians and children who have been besieged in a school without harm. We urge the international community, including the United Nations, to demand the safety of the civilians and sixty (60) children. Furthermore, we request support in stopping the international war crimes committed by military terrorists and seeking justice.

Ignoring the crimes committed by military terrorists encourages them to commit more crimes. Besides, we strongly urge the international community not to take any actions that could be interpreted as encouragement to military terrorists.

The Ministries of Human Rights and Ministry of Women, Youth, and Children Affairs will collaborate with other ministries to document these serious human rights violations and continue their efforts to seek justice and take action through various means.
