The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the Ministry of Human Rights (MOHR) of the National Unity Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar condemn in the strongest possible terms the executions of Ko Jimmy, Ko Phyo Zeya Thaw, Ko Hla Myo Aung and Ko Aung Thura Zaw by the illegal military junta.<\/p>

Flaunting its latest act of terror, the junta publicly reported the executions in The Global New Light of Myanmar on the 25th of July 2022.<\/p>

MOFA and MOHR extend their sincere condolences to the families and friends of the executed men, who were martyred for their commitment to a free and democratic Myanmar. Ko Jimmy was a celebrated pro-democracy activist and Ko Phyo Zeya Thaw was a former parliamentarian.<\/span><\/p>

While murder and summary executions are long established junta tactics, the men were the first persons to be hanged by the military under the fa\u00e7ade of legal process in over three decades. Extrajudicial in nature, the executions followed flawed closed-door proceedings by military tribunals that outright denied due process protections and access to justice.<\/p>

In a letter dated the 10th of June, ASEAN Chair Hun Sen appealed to the junta to drop its plans, warning that the executions would \u2018cause a widespread negative reaction from the international community\u2019 and have \u2018serious impacts on the efforts made by ASEAN\u2019.<\/span><\/p>

The executions also reportedly came just hours after the International Court of Justice rejected the preliminary objections maintained by the junta in the case concerning Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (The Gambia v. Myanmar). In so doing, the Court cleared the way for substantive hearings on the atrocities directed against the Rohingya during military operations in 2016 and 2017.<\/span><\/p>

The UN Security Council must urgently convene a plenary session on Myanmar. The Security Council\u2019s previous press statements, which called for the release of political prisoners and respect for the rule of law, have not only failed but have provoked a continuing escalation by the junta. The Security Council must respond in kind by adopting a resolution that, amongst other decisive steps, refers the situation in Myanmar to the International Criminal Court.<\/p>

Furthermore, ASEAN must act on its Chair\u2019s warning and in follow up to its statement condemning the executions by taking collective action against the junta as a threat to peace and security in the region<\/p>

The National Unity Government has issued a separate statement addressed to the people of Myanmar expressing outrage at the barbaric executions and calling for a unified response. The National Unity Government will continue to pursue every available avenue to hold the junta terrorists to full account.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
